How to Replace Brake Pads on an Electric Scooter (XOD Maintenance Guide)

Hearing a terrifying metal-on-metal grind? 🛑

A mushy brake lever does not by itself prove that the pads need replacing. Check for air, leaks and connection problems using the brake inspection and bleeding instructions. Replace pads when inspection shows that they require replacement, using the correct procedure and compatible pads for the exact caliper.

Here is your XOD Maintenance Guide to swapping them like a pro.

🛠️ Pre-Ride Prep

  • Tools Needed: Allen wrenches, flathead screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, clean rag, and isopropyl alcohol.
  • Safety First: Turn off the scooter and disconnect the battery.

🔧 The 5-Step Pro Swap

Step 1: Drop the Wheel

Loosen the axle bolts and slide the wheel out. 🚨 Warning: Handle hub motor wires carefully during wheel removal.

Step 2: Pop Out Worn Pads

Use a screwdriver to gently pry out the retaining pin or clip, then slide the worn pads out of the caliper slots.

Step 3: The Piston Trick (Do Not Skip!) ⚠️

New pads are thicker. Not retracting the brake piston before installing new pads can cause caliper binding or rotor drag. Use a tire lever or large flathead to gently push caliper pistons back before installing new pads.

Gently retract the hydraulic brake caliper piston to create enough space for the thicker new pads.

Step 4: Clean the Crime Scene

Wipe down the caliper interior with isopropyl alcohol. Remember: Contaminating brake rotors with oil or dirt reduces braking performance; handle rotors with clean hands.

Step 5: Slap New Pads In

Slide fresh pads into the same slots, ensuring the friction material faces the rotor. Reinstall the pin and remount your wheel.

🔍 Which Compound Do You Need?

XOD brake pads come in Carbon-Ceramic (Plumbago) for quiet urban commuting, Copper-Based/Semi-Metal as all-rounder, and Full Sintered for heavy-duty/high-speed use.

  • 🍃 Carbon-Ceramic: Ultra-quiet, low dust.
  • ⚖️ Copper-Based: The ultimate all-rounder for wet/dry riding.
  • 🔥 Full Sintered: Max stopping power. Some XOD models feature integrated cooling fins that dissipate heat.

✅ XOD Direct-Fit Compatibility

Don't use cheap bicycle pads! They are not recommended – scooter pads have different dimensions and retention mechanisms.

Choose replacement pads that match the exact XOD caliper and intended riding conditions. Confirm the pad dimensions, shape and retention arrangement for your caliper before ordering; a scooter brand or the H-Series name alone does not establish that every pad SKU is interchangeable.

These are direct replacements if you ride a scooter equipped with XOD's H-Series hydraulic calipers (XD-H800, XD-H801, XD-H880, XD-H802), which are popular among Kukirin/Joyor/Ausom scooter riders.
